NBMS

NBMS: Dutch Association for Brokers in Ships

The NBMS was founded in 1940 by, then mostly , ship brokers. Out of the need to have a central point that colleagues (mostly sole proprietors) could fall back on. It is not much different today. The Yacht Brokers Section has grown to be the largest section, but they too face legislation similar to ship brokers.

The NBMS is an association of sworn and EMCI certified Ship Brokers in 3 disciplines:

a. Sea vessels, including Fishing vessels and Dredgers
b. Rhine and inland vessels
c. Pleasure craft

The association promotes the common interests of its members and has members, associate members and patrons, and one of its tasks is to maintain the quality of ship brokerage at a high level. The association sets high standards for the professionalism and reliability of its members, among other things, through self-regulation and the use of a Code of Professional Ethics that guides members in the practice of their profession. Members also have an obligation to undergo annual training to ensure that they are always “up to date” with clients and that transactions are always set up and settled in accordance with the latest regulations.
