Linssen Yachts

Linssen Yachts is one of the oldest yacht yards in the Netherlands. This yard was founded in 1949 by Mr. Jac. Linssen Sr. at Maasbracht, a town on the Limburg River Meuse. Maasbracht was already known at that time for its inland waterway port, because of this there were about 200 war-damaged barges waiting to be repaired. With the amount of work this freed up, many young entrepreneurs saw their opportunities. So did Mr. Linssen, trained as a ship carpenter and soon at home in machine woodworking. In a short time, he built a name in the manufacture of teak doors, wheelhouses and steering wheels.

Due to yard expansion, a metal department was soon integrated into the company. Within this department, steel rowboats, workboats and vlets were built. With the tough workboat models, the move to a more luxurious segment was obvious. Through further development of the superstructure, serial yacht building at ‘Scheepswerf en Houtindustrie St. Jozef Jac. Linssen’ was a fact.

In the 1970s, Jos Linssen took over the helm from his father. He took the development of professional series yacht building in steel to a higher level and renamed the company Linssen Yachts B.V. In the following years, brothers Harry, Jan and Peter also took their place in the family business.

Jos Linssen introduced a new generation of vlets in the mid-1970s, the first Linssen Sturdy model series. “4 new St. Joseph fleets,” the text of the introductory brochures and advertisements read. With this particular model series, he set a decisive trend whose influence on developments in Dutch yacht building in the 8- to 15-meter segment is still emphatic even now, after more than 30 years. The St. Jozef vlets formed the basis for the legendary Linssen Classic Sturdy Series. Besides the vlet models, Jos Linssen developed the well-known Linssen SL-Series and the Linssen SE- and SX-Series in the 1980s. In 1995, in collaboration with Dick Lefeber (died in 2000), the Dutch Sturdy® Series was developed, a model series that was built with great success until 2005. In parallel with this development, the Grand Sturdy® Series was launched in the larger (15 m) segment. Linssen Yachts commissioned Bureau voor Scheepsbouw W. de Vries Lentsch to design the Grand Sturdy. Successively Willem de Vries Lentsch and Anne Elsinga designed the Grand Sturdy® 500 Variotop® and the Grand Sturdy® 460. Within a few years, the Grand Sturdy Series became a household name throughout Europe.
The development of the successful series continued unabated. With seemingly inexhaustible creativity, Anne Elsinga and the in-house Linssen development team worked ceaselessly on the design and further development of the Grand Sturdys. Over the years, therefore, many new variants and models based on the characteristic design were presented. For more information, visit the Linssen Yachts website.
